Quality principles

There is always a debate between quality and grade and lot of theories exists that define quality in various ways, but I’ve a little bit different definition and parameters to define anything as quality. What I believe is that “Anything below excellence is a compromise”.

If a person, product or service is not excellent and doesn’t exceed the expectations of excellence then it cannot be termed as quality. Mind you there are differences between quality and grade, to explain it further I will quote an example; a “C” grade movie can be very good in quality based on the way it is picturized , theme centric, acted well and the star delivering excellent performance, whereas a “A” grade movie might be considered a poor quality if it doesn’t over shine the parameters of gauging movie.

Some quality theories talk about zero defect practices but this doesn’t imply that there are no defects and the product or service is excellent. Obviously there is a cost involved in achieving excellence and the cost will be more as compared to cost associated merely with creating quality. Cost of achieving excellence will be over and above to other cost component of quality namely Prevention cost, appraisal cost & failure cost.

Some theories define quality as fitness for use; a “C” grade product can be fit for use but it doesn’t mean that it’s an excellent quality rather it could be called as compromise. Excellence will always lead to “A” Grade product and will exceed customer expectations
